Doron Benzioni was born in 1961 in Tel Aviv. He spent his childhood in Holon and his adolescent years on a kibbutz in the Negev, where he experienced working in agriculture and forged his connection with the land. In the eighties, Doron was a lighting specialist, working at the Colosseum in Tel Aviv, and later founding and managing a successful lighting company for parties and events. In the early nineties, he owned a jeep and took tourists on trips through the desert. Over the years, Doron combined design and organizing lighting for events with his love of the desert, where he collected many of his creative materials: barrels, rusty metal pieces, and anything that ignited his imagination as potential raw material for sculpting. “Today, I sculpt with metal and primarily create my works for people; my design work is inspired by and designed for people with whom I have forged a relationship,” the artist explains. At his studio, “Barzeliya,” in the artists’ colony, Doron integrates metal sculpture with his Bar B’Emza HaMidbar [“Bar in the middle of the desert”], which has become an iconic location.
